Paris officers shot, 1 fatally, in Champs-Elysees attack

The Champs Elysées in Paris has been closed. Authorities are telling people to avoid the area. Multiple security vehicles are on the scene

At least a French police officer has been shot dead and two others have been injured in Paris in a terrorist attack claimed by the Daesh terrorist group.

Brandet said the shooting started at shortly after 9 p.m. when a auto stopped alongside a stationary police vehicle.

Meanwhile, as France's elite anti-terrorism took control of the crime scene and searched the shooter's auto for possible explosives dozens of police officers kept the curious away.

Paris police and soldiers have sealed off the area around the Champs-Elysees after an attack on police, ordering tourists back into their hotels and blocking people from approaching the scene.

It comes three days before French voters start elections for a new president.

Security forces are more widespread in Paris since deadly Islamic extremist attacks in recent years, and France remains under a state of emergency. Badi Ftaiti, a Tunisian-born mason who has spent three decades in Paris, said the attack didn't panic him.

The person suspected of opening fire on the officers on the Champs-Elysees was also shot and killed, French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre Henry-Brandet said.

The shooting shut down the famed Champs-Elysees, one of Paris' top tourist attractions and home to the iconic Arc de Triomphe monument.

CNN affiliate BFMTV is reporting that Paris anti-terror forces are heading the investigation, but Police Secretary Yvan Assioma told reporters there were "no theories" about whether this was a criminal act or an act of terror.

The avenue has been closed and authorities are telling people to avoid the area.

Hollande, who is not running again for office in an election which holds its first round on Sunday, said: "We shall be of the utmost vigilance, especially in relation to the election".

Earlier this week, two men were arrested in Marseille whom police said had been planning an attack ahead of the election.

A witness identified only as Ines told French television station BFM that she heard a shooting, saw a man's body on the ground and the area was quickly evacuated by police. He said it is too early to know if the gunman had an accomplice.

Donald Trump has offered his condolences to the people of France saying it looks like another terrorist attack. At the time of the shooting, all 11 presidential candidates were appearing on television. "It just never ends".

None of the candidates immediately commented.
