Pence gives stern warning to North Korea

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence visits the truce village of Panmunjom South Korea

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Wednesday that Washington would work with its allies and China to put economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea but added that America would defeat any attack with an "overwhelming response".

In Washington, President Trump told CNN at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll that North Korea has “gotta behave.”.

He said that under President Donald Trump, the US will stand up to its enemies with its allies.

"My hope is that they'll continue to get the message not just from the United States, here in Japan, and in South Korea, but on an increasing basis from China and countries all over the world committing to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula", he said.

Mr Pence said: "We will not rest and will not relent until we obtain the objective of a denuclearised Korean Peninsula". His national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, said the US would rely on its allies as well as Chinese leadership to resolve the issues with North Korea. The term "reckless" is one the North Koreans have used to describe ongoing large-scale USA and South Korean military exercises, which the North calls a dress rehearsal for an invasion.

Noting Trump's recent military actions in Syria and Afghanistan, Pence said, "North Korea would do well not to test his resolve", or the USA armed forces in the region. US President Donald Trump also said he's sending an "armada" to Korea.

"Despite the strong ties between the USA and Korea, we have to honest about where our trade relationship is".

In the last few weeks, China has refused coal shipments from North Korea and has made public comments regarding its unhappiness with Kim Jong-un's policies.

The American vice president is on a 10-day trip to Asia that has been dominated by the North Korea issue.

McMaster cited Trump's recent decision to order missile strikes in Syria after a chemical attack blamed on the Assad government, as a sign that the president "is clearly comfortable making tough decisions".

"You're aware that the leader of North Korea again recklessly tried to provoke something by launching a missile", he recently told reporters. In part, it is meant to take the place of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the regional trade pact that Trump withdrew from shortly after taking office.

"Why would I call China a currency manipulator when they are working with us on the North Korean problem?"

The U.S. trade deficit in goods with South Korea increased from $13.2 billion in 2011 to $27.7 billion a year ago, according to U.S. government figures.

Speculation that the USA may have used cyber capabilities to thwart the North Korean missile test comes at a time of escalating rhetoric between the two nations. And the vice president believes American voters will be able to pinpoint accomplishments as it reflects on the administration's first 100 days. Recent satellite imagery suggests the country could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.

The US Navy's decision to reroute an aircraft carrier strike group destined for Australia to the "western Pacific" sparked speculation it was heading to the Korean Peninsula, adding to the jitters in the region.
