Researchers to look for CTE evidence in Hernandez's brain

"The family of Aaron Hernandez has made a decision to donate Aaron's brain to study so that we can possibly help other young men who decide to play football and to help further that cause and also possibly shed more light on this case", Baez said.

A top MA official says the medical examiner will release Aaron Hernandez's brain to Boston University for research as soon as the investigation into his death is completed. An autopsy was performed by the medical examiner's office in Boston to determine his cause and manner of death, according to the Worcester District Attorney's Office.

Mr Baez expressed concern that any delay in releasing the brain to BU would compromise the study of it. Investigators determined that Hernandez was alone at the time of his death and said there was no signs that anyone had struggled to enter his single-inmate cell.

Also, officials said, Hernandez tried to block his cell door from the inside by jamming it with several items preventing it from being opened. He was serving a life sentence for the 2013 slaying of a onetime friend.

The 27-year-old former University of Florida standout died five days after a jury acquitted him in those two deaths, which prosecutors alleged was precipitated by one of the men accidentally spilling a drink on Hernandez at a Boston nightclub.

"We need to leave no stone unturned, and we need to specifically do everything possible to find out what happened", Baez said Thursday. In them, he asked his loved ones not to shed tears but did not give a reason why he committed suicide.

Hernandez was discovered at around 3 a.m. and was immediately brought to UMass Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead an hour later.

Still, he was a productive tight end for the Patriots for three seasons.

Hernandez's family wants his brain to be studied by the Boston University CTE Center for a brain disease found in some football players.

The former National Football League star's death left friends, family and his legal team shocked and in disbelief, searching for an explanation.

Many other questions remain unanswered, including why Hernandez would kill himself just days after the he was cleared of two murder charges.

Investigations are now ongoing to discover what reasons Hernandez may have had to make the decision to take his own life since things seemed to be getting better for him.

Former NFL footballer Aaron Hernandez was found with a Bible verse scrawled on his forehead after taking his own life, according to local media reports.

Doctors say those afflicted by it can suffer memory loss, impeded speech and disorientation, and possibly become more susceptible to suicide. He was cut by the team in 2013 after he was arrested in the Lloyd murder.

On the same day of his death, Hernandez's former team was honoured by President Donald Trump at the White House for their Super Bowl victory over Atlanta in February.
