Samsung predicts better-than-expected quarterly profits

The company said the operating profit for the first quarter was likely 9.9 trillion won ($8.8 billion USD). Revenue jumped 0.4 percent to 50 trillion won, above the analysts' forecasts.

"The semiconductor business was likely the main driver for earnings", said Heungkuk Securities analyst Lee Min Hee, adding that sales of mid- to low-tier smartphones also helped the mobile business to stay profitable.

Details about the successor to last year's Galaxy Note 7 are quite scarce, but some reports state that the smartphone will have 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Sales of its new G6 flagship smartphone began in March and will not provide meaningful contributions until the second quarter.

Industry officials said the Galaxy S8 could break the previous preorder record set by the Galaxy Note 7, though the preorder period for the S8 is two days shorter than that of the Note 7.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 was launched last month in NY and London. He and Samsung have denied wrongdoing. Samsung was forced to recall it late previous year after reports of the device overheating and exploding.

Like the rest of the Galaxy C series, the newly launched Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro comes in with an impressive all-metal design that has become characteristic of the South Korean company's midrange phones.

The scandal involves Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee and several top executives accused of bribery and embezzlement.

In court, Lee listened as prosecutors accused him of bribing Park and her confidant, Choi Soon-sil, in order to win support for a key merger that would cement his leadership of the sprawling Samsung business empire. The date seen on the phone's lock screen indicates that the pictures were taken Friday, April 7th, and the specs state that it's running a build of Android 7.0 from February 2017 - well after Samsung issued a global recall of the Note 7.

The verdict is expected to be delivered in late May.
