Soccer bus bombing suspect had unusual motive, prosecutors say

Man arrested over bombing of Borussia Dortmund bus motivated by greed, prosecutors allege

Dortmund defender Marc Bartra was wounded by the blasts, with a decision taken to delay the fixture by 24 hours. A motorcycle police officer suffered inner ear damage from the blast. "He was charged with attempted murder, production of an explosive device and infliction of unsafe body injury", the statement read.

The options that the suspect purchased "give the right to sell Borussia Dortmund shares at 5.20 euros", the financial news site writes, and his investment would pay off only if the value fell markedly below that.

The prosecutor's office says Sergey W. had bought 15,000 shares in the club just before the bombing, and planned to speculate on them if the stock price plummeted.

The accused man was staying in the same hotel as the Borussia Dortmund team, the German federal prosecutor's office said.

He checked into the hotel twice -once between Match 7 and March 9 to scout out the best location for the bombs, and again between April 9 and 13 and from April 16 and 20 because it was not clear the exact date of the Monaco match.

In a joint statement, Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke and president Dr Reinhard Rauball said: 'We are grateful for the fact that in the suspect the responsible person for the humiliating attack on our players and staff members could be taken'.

The team's share price has fallen by about 5.5 percent on the Deutsche Boerse since the attack and closed at 5.36 euros on Thursday.

The devices were remotely triggered, and shrapnel was found as far as 250 metres away.

Citing unnamed investigators, Bild said police believed the suspect was capable of building a remotely-triggered bomb, having won an educational award in electronics and engineering in 2005.

Following the explosion, which caused panic and chaos among terrified hotel guests, the suspect went to the L'Arrivee restaurant and ordered a steak, Bild reported.

Investigators found notes at the scene claiming responsibility on behalf of Islamic extremists, but quickly doubted their authenticity.

Earlier, a 26-year-old Iraqi national, identified as Abdul Beset A., was detained in alleged connection with the Dortmund attack.

With regard to a far-right email claiming responsibility for the attack, which mentioned Adolf Hitler and was sent to a Berlin newspaper, meanwhile, the statement said it included "contradictions and inconsistencies" and that "there is now no indication that it comes from the perpetrator".

A little over a week after an explosion on a German soccer team's bus injured one and postponed the players' game against Monaco, a surprising twist in the case has been revealed.
