Survivor: Transgender contestant Zeke Smith outed

'Survivor' contestant Zeke Smith comes out as transgender after being outed

A contestant has been evicted from USA reality show Survivor: Game Changers, in a dramatic confrontation that commentators have called "the worst thing" that's happened in any of the show's 34 seasons.

During Wednesday night's episode, contestant Jeff Varner outed Zeke Smith as transgender during the tribal council part of the CBS show. "Deceptions on levels, Jeff, that these guys don't even understand", Varner said to "Survivor" host Jeff Probst.

Varner's self-defense was not a success with other players, some of whom were in tears. Much of the outrage focused on Varner's actions, his invasion of Smith's privacy and the trauma of a public outing.

"I think he hoped others would believe that trans people are unsafe and fraudulent", Smith said.

Varner has since been condemned by GLAAD with the LGBTQ rights organization working with CBS and Smith to have the proper responses in place for the episode airing. "I am basically outing him to the world against his will, which is a disgusting, frightful thing to do to anyone". "In the moment, it felt like the right thing to do was accept his apology and say that we'd find a way to work it out, but I don't really - I really struggle with forgiving him every day", Zeke revealed. I'd return home, laugh at my misadventure, and go about my life, casually trans in the same way that Zac Efron is casually Jewish. "I think if he wants to be an ally to trans people, he has a long way to go".

Adams said they had worked with the network to "ensure that when the episode aired, Zeke would have the opportunity to speak for himself about his experience".

"I recklessly revealed something I mistakenly believed everyone already knew". And that's what signaled to me the worst had happened. there was this primal instinct in me that just said 'run, '. Jeff Probst took Varner to task and reminded him he outed Zeke as trans to show he was deceptive and that doesn't align with saying he thought Zeke was out. It can leave scars that haunt for a lifetime.

"We cisgender Americans live with an enormous amount of privilege and should spend time pondering how we can use that for greater good", Jeff concluded. When we disrespect or discriminate, or turn blind eyes to it, we wound all of us.

Probst, who strongly criticized Varner in the portion that aired, did acknowledge in the unaired part of the Tribal Council that he had known Varner for almost 20 years and didn't think he had "a hateful bone in his body", Varner recalled.

An odd tidbit to come out of this ordeal is CBS' decision to air it in the first place.
