Tesla recalling 53000 vehicles worldwide for brake problem

Tesla recalls 53000 of its Model S, Model X cars

Tesla Inc TSLA.O said on Thursday it will recall 53,000 of its Model S and Model X cars globally for a parking brake issue, according to a statement on its website.

United States luxury electric auto maker Tesla plans to install 14 high-speed supercharger stations across the country by the end of this year, according to its global sales head. Tesla says less than 5 per cent of the vehicles it's recalling may be affected, but it wants to inspect them all to make sure.

Despite the faulty part, Tesla hasn't seen "a single accident or injury" relating to the brake issue or reports of the system failing to hold a parked vehicle or stop a vehicle in an emergency. Tesla produced nearly 84,000 vehicles in 2016 and plans to make half a million in 2018, then 1 million in 2020.

The company voluntarily recalled 3,000 of its Model S cars in November to resolve seatbelt connectivity problems.

Some analysts have expressed skepticism about the meteoric rise in Tesla shares given that the company still sells only a fraction of cars compared with GM or Ford. We have also determined that only a very small percentage of gears in vehicles built during this period were manufactured improperly.

Earlier this month, Tesla eclipsed General Motors to become the most valuable vehicle company in the U.S., marking a milestone moment fin the meteoric rise of a company founded only 14 years ago. The company services customer vehicles instead through a network of around 135 service centers and with mobile technicians who fix customer cars at their homes or workplaces.

Tesla, which has a design studio in Hawthorne, has received high federal safety ratings for its vehicles, although some owners have become concerned about safety features with Autopilot.

The electric auto giant said around two per cent of the 53,000 vehicles which were made in February to October 2016 have been affected. But due to the huge number of parts what will be needed, a total recall could take as long as October.
