Tillerson: Iran deal failed in key denuclearization objective
As the state department announced a review of the 2015 deal to establish if the lifting of sanctions was in the United States' security interests, USA secretary of state Rex Tillerson said that Iran is the world's "leading state sponsor of terrorism" and responsible for "intensifying multiple conflicts and undermining U.S. interests in countries such as Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Lebanon" as well as supporting attacks against Israel.
He also dismissed the Iran nuclear agreement as one that would allow, not prevent, Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
"So far, it has defied both".
He pointed to sections that require USA government officials to "make every effort to support the successful implementation of this JCPOA including in their public statements" and to refrain from any policy meant to "adversely affect the normalisation of trade and economic relations with Iran".
In announcing a broad review of Iran policy the Trump administration has not jettisoned the nuclear deal.
He has ordered a 90-day review of whether to abandon it - a move that would be strongly opposed by the other signatories to the deal: Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation. "I think the United States has enough roles".

Iran helped to create and continues to fund Hezbollah, the Lebanese military and political organisation which the United States has listed as a terrorist organisation.
"That in no way mitigates against or excuses the other Iranian activities in the region including the war in Yemen that grinds on and what they're doing in Syria" to keep President Bashar Assad in power", he said.
The deal came into force on January 16, 2016, after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran was ready to implement the program to reduce its nuclear potential. All of this gives the impression that, while the Trump administration is still opposed to the deal, it will probably remain in place for the time being.
