The injured people were rushed to different hospitals in Tirupati and Srikalahasti areas, which are located close to the accident spot.

Vijayawada: At least 20 persons were killed and 24 injured when a truck rammed into a group of villagers standing outside some shops in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district on Friday, police said.

Yerpedu is at a "T" junction, leading to Tirupati, Srikalahasti and Venkatagiri towns and the accident spot is close to this junction.

While six people died in the collision, others lost their lives due to electrocution. The condition of 10 of the injured was said to be critical.

The state cabinet, which met here this afternoon, announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the kin of the deceased.

The local government has ordered an investigation.

Some police officers also sustained injuries, said Superintendent of Police (Tirupati Urban) Jayalakshmi.

Meanwhile, tense situation is prevailing near Ruia hospital as relatives of the victims are thronging the hospital and demanding action against the driver.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took stock of the situation and instructed ministers and other public representatives to go to the site of the accident immediately and provide the victims with all the necessary assistance.

YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy has also condoled the loss of lives in the mishap.
