Trump congratulates Turkish President Erdogan on referendum victory

White House confirms Trump congratulated Erdogan on referendum

The main opposition party has demanded the result be nullified, saying the voting was marred by irregularities.

Meanwhile, Turkish police detained 38 people in Istanbul over peaceful street protests that took place after Sunday's referendum on expanding President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's powers, opposition newspaper Birgun and activists reported.

Mr Evans said three-quarters of TV and press coverage of the campaign had been given to Erdogan's Yes campaign, while ruled were changed to allow unstamped ballot papers to be counted.

It will delight Erdogan supporters, who will see it as legitimising the president's victory.

The "Yes" camp won more than 51 percent in Sunday's referendum while the "No" side got nearly 49 percent, according to near-complete results released by Turkey's election authorities.

Electoral board head Sadi Guven said the objections would be evaluated later on Wednesday. Berlin said "take note" of the provisional result of the vote that saw the "yes" win with 51.37% after tabulation of the ballots in 99.45% of the ballot boxes.

President Recep Erdogan claimed victory on Sunday night in Turkey's historic referendum on a new constitution that will hand him sweeping powers.

The opposition has been particularly incensed by a last-minute move from the YSK to accept ballot documents in envelopes without an official stamp.

"We call on the authorities to launch a transparent investigation into these alleged irregularities", Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said when asked about the conclusions of the observer mission from the Council of Europe human rights body.

"We would like other countries and institutions to show respect to the decision of the nation", he said, calling allies to now show greater awareness of Turkey's "sensitivities" in the "fight against terror".

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Erdogan and Trump would meet in person next month, before a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. The deputy chairman of the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) said on Tuesday that his party had done the same, and would use all legal paths to challenge the vote.

"The OSCE's report has no reliability as their observations lack objectivity and are extremely partial", Cavusoglu told a news conference in Ankara.
