Tsonga loses opening match in Monte Carlo, Djokovic wins

Edmund punches the air in celebration during the clash and looked comfortable against Nadal

World number one Andy Murray blew a 4-0 lead in the deciding set as he fell to a shock defeat by Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Monte Carlo Masters third round.

It was the first time back on the ATP since his elbow problem - his last match was a second-round loss to Vasek Pospisil at Indian Wells on March 12. The victor will go on to meet either No5 seed Marin Cilic, a convincing victor over Jeremy Chardy, 6-3, 6-0, or Berdych, who denied Haas one more win in a tight three-setter, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Murray was kept on the back foot in the opening set as he lost the first game and only caught up late.

With Cuevas on serve again at 5-6, Pouille clinched victory on his second match point when the former hit another backhand long.

The three-time Grand Slam champion looked imperious in the first set, but dropped his level in the next as his Czech rival levelled the match.

Murray showed trademark fight in fending off three break points at 4-4 in the decider, but could not respond when the Spaniard was in the ascendancy in his next service game.

"He obviously started playing better towards the end of the set".

And two games later Murray completed the turnaround by winning the set when Muller missed a simple volley, smashing his racket in frustration.

The next match could be tough, too.

The three-time Grand Slam victor prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Ramos-Vinolas will now lock horns with fifth-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic for a place in semi-finals. He likes the clay, he competes hard on the surface.

Living up to his top-seed ranking, Murray took the opening set despite struggling to hold on to his serve, breaking his opponent four times.

Novak Djokovic's road to recovery continued with victory against Pablo Carreno Busta as he secured his passage through to the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. "Finally, I got out of that tricky situation, which was probably the most positive thing I take from today", he added.

"The last two years, always when I serve, it's just a little bit sore".

Wednesday's later matches saw world No.11 Grigor Dimitrov, the eighth seed, suffer an unexpected 4-6 6-3 6-2 defeat at the hands of German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff. He could also jump to first in the list of top clay-court titlists with his 50th-what would be his 70th title overall.
