Turkey's pro-Kurdish opposition appeals for annulment of referendum

President Donald Trump congratulated Tayyip Erdogan on the referendum victory and also discussed the war in Syria with the Turkish leader according to a White House statement

Turkey's main opposition party urged the country's electoral board Monday to cancel the results of a landmark referendum that granted sweeping new po.

Critics fear the changes will lead to autocratic one-man rule under Erdogan, but supporters say they simply put Turkey in line with France and the United States and are needed for efficient government.

The move had prevented proper records being kept and could have affected the results, the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) - known as a body opposed to the current Ankara government - said, adding in a statement: "With this illegal decision, ballot box councils [namely, officials at polling stations] were misled into believing that the use of unstamped ballots was appropriate". Similar queues were also reported in front of an election board office in Istanbul. He accused the board of "changing the rules midgame".

The U.S. response has been different, with President Donald Trump calling Erdogan shortly after the referendum to congratulate him on his win.

Speaking in parliament yesterday, Yildirim said "rumors" of irregularities were a vain effort to cast doubt on the result.

Erdogan, on Tuesday, said a constitutional reform package - backed by a narrow majority of Turkey's voters in a referendum earlier this week - was not about him.

"We demand the cancellation of this referendum", Tezcan said.

In Ankara, Fatma Korur, 46, said she was exercising her constitutional right to object to "illegal" results.

But the "Yes" vote has even wider implications for Turkey, which joined North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in 1952 and in the last half-century has been engaged in a stalled bid to join the European Union.

Declining to congratulate the Turkish president, the European Union executive's second official response since the vote instead focused on observer findings that the vote was skewed in Erdogan's favour without a proper legal framework and with late changes in ballot counting.

"One thing is clear: The introduction of the death penalty would be synonymous with the end of the European dream".

EU Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas called on Turkish authorities "to launch transparent investigations into these alleged irregularities found by the observers".

Worldwide election observers and opposition parties have reported numerous voting irregularities during the vote which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won by a narrow margin.

But it has been particularly outraged by an electoral board decision, announced as the polls closed Sunday, to accept ballots that didn't bear the official stamps used to verify they are genuine, as required by Turkish law.

"We are here today for the sake of Turkey, to live together, to take a stand for our votes", protester Tezcan Karakus Candan said.

According to Turkish officials, the leaders also discussed the situation in Syria, with Trump commending Turkey's support of recent US military strikes against the regime of dictator Bashir al-Assad.

Two global observer missions said the referendum campaign had been conducted in an unfair environment in which opposition voices were suppressed.
