What Does Bernie Sanders Think Of Jon Ossoff? His Remarks Are Puzzling

Battle for Georgia congressional seat heats

Around 9 a.m., the president tweeted that Democrats "failed" in the Kansas race and "are now failing in Georgia".

The former Georgia secretary of state will face Democrat Jon Ossoff in a runoff for the 6th Congressional District.

Tuesday's election also narrowed the crowded field of eleven Republican candidates down to just one: moderate Republican Karen Handel, who is heavily favored to win in a district that hasn't sent a Democrat to Congress since 1979. If Ossoff had won at least 50%, he would have secured the seat outright. Price, now the president's Health and Human Services secretary, was re-elected with almost 62 percent of the vote in 2016.

Roughly five hours after polling locations closed, major networks began projecting that Georgia's 6th District U.S. House special election would be heading toward a runoff on June 20.

DuBose Porter, chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party, said the 6th District offers the flawless setting for state and national Democrats to prove their momentum heading into 2018. And while Handel tweeted thanking Trump for a call after last night's election, it's unclear whether his involvement is more of a help or a hindrance for her prospects - and other Republicans in tough races.

Those in the race are split among Trump supporters and candidates trying to hold the president at arm's length. If she can't, then Ossoff has a chance of winning in June.

Despite the fact this suburban Atlanta-based seat has been solidly Republican for decades, President Donald Trump carried it by a slim margin in 2016, capturing 48% of the vote to Hillary Clinton's 47%.

Democrats, searching for answers at a time when they are shut out of power in Washington, found a unifying figure in Mr Ossoff, a 30-year-old documentary film-maker who campaigned on a promise to "Make Trump Furious". Republicans are bidding to prevent a major upset in a conservative Georgia congressional district Tuesday where Democrats stoked by opposition t.

Ossoff has received widespread, national support from Democrat voters, despite his lack of clear policy ideas. But as the votes cast on Election Day were tallied, his numbers fell and finally settled below the 50% threshold.

Perez: Oh, I think we can do this in the next 60 days here in Georgia.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer echoed the sentiment. "And while Republicans have their backs against the wall, Democrats will keep their foot on the gas through Election Day because the residents of Georgia's 6district deserve a representative who will fight for them", he said.
