Kerala: Woman chops off genitals of self-styled godman who allegedly tried to rape her

A 23-year-old law student in Kerala allegedly chopped off the penis of a swami, a self-styled godman, who had been allegedly raping her for many years at her house.

Gangeshananda Theerthapadar, who belongs to the Thiruvananthapuram centre of the Kollam Panmana Ashram, was a regular visitor to the house of this girl since the past seven years.

According to a report on The News Minute, police say the woman gave a statement alleging that the Swami had been abusing her for several years, since she was in her high school.

On Friday night, Hariswamy reportedly tried to molest the woman again, she cut of his genitals with the knife.

Speaking to doctors who treated him at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital, Hari Swamy said that he himself had cut his penis.

He has been booked under Section 376 (Rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO).

She said, though she complained to her mother about the sexual harassment that began when she was 16, the mother did not do anything about it.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praised the woman for her "courageous step".

He was brought to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital around 12.40 am with his genital severed nearly 90 percent, the hospital statement said.

A team of medical professionals conducted a plastic surgery on the Swami, and is now out of danger, the statement said. Her father suffered a paralysis attack a few years ago.

Prameela Devi, a member of the Kerala State Women's Commission, said she was proud of the woman for doing this.

"Such an act by anyone, especially when it comes under the guise of a religious tag, is in no way acceptable", she said.
