'A new page' as Trump makes historic visit to Saudi Arabia

Robert Hormats Says Trump Must Learn Saudi Culture

President Donald Trump and King Salman of Saudi Arabia met briefly for a coffee ceremony after the president's arrival Saturday in Riyadh.

For one, they've praised Trump's rhetoric about Iran posing a threat to the nation.

In Riyadh, a five-story image of Trump's face was projected on the exterior of the hotel he is staying at.

Trump's first official foreign trip since taking office will coincide with three key summits on Saturday and Sunday, as well as several business activities, cultural, intellectual and sports celebrations.

Earlier, Trump waved as he stood atop stairs on Air Force One that had been rolled to the side of the official presidential aircraft as it landed.

Trump and his wife Melania, who dressed conservatively in black but did not cover her hair, walked side-by-side to the tarmac where they both shook hands with Saudi King Salman.

Prior to the ceremonial greeting on Saturday, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said that Trump got very little sleep on the 14-hour flight, CNN reported.

President Donald Trump has landed in Saudi Arabia for his first stop overseas since taking office, a visit meant to bolster partnerships overseas that aides hope can reset a scandal-pocked narrative back home. He is also hoping to move past the controversies engulfing his administration.

That, together with a more muted focus on human rights and the likely announcement of new arms deals, should please Washington's traditional Sunni Gulf allies.

After two days of meetings in Riyadh, Trump will travel to Israel, have an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican, and meet with allies at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels and the Group of 7 wealthy nations in Sicily.

Trump will make stops next week in Israel, Belgium and Italy. The package includes tanks, combat ships, missile defense systems, radar and communications and cybersecurity technology.

Prime Minister Theresa May visited Saudi Arabia in April, but chose not to wear a headscarf.

"He will encourage our Arab and Muslim partners to take bold, new steps to promote peace and to confront those, from ISIS to Al-Qaeda... who perpetuate chaos and violence that has inflicted so much suffering throughout the Muslim world and beyond", said Trump's National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster.

In another development, the Washington Post said a current White House official close to Trump was a significant "person of interest" in the investigation into possible ties between Trump's presidential campaign past year and Russian Federation.

It also abandons some of the harsh anti-Muslim rhetoric that defined Trump's presidential campaign and does not contain the words "radical Islamic terror", a phrase Trump repeatedly criticized Hillary Clinton for not using during last year's campaign.

Trump will deliver a major speech Sunday to the leaders of more than two dozen Muslim nations where he'll urge countries to drive out extremists. The draft notably refrains from mentioning democracy and human rights - topics Arab leaders often view as US moralizing - in favor of the more limited goals of peace and stability.
