Accused Times Square driver's troubled past included Navy prison

A speeding, wrong-way driver with a history of DWIs jumped a curb at 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue in Times Square and carved a three-and-a-half-block tear of horror at lunchtime through pedestrian-choked sidewalks, killing an 18-year-old woman and injuring 22 others, four of them critically.

Navy records show he spent two months in a military prison in Charleston, South Carolina, in the summer of 2013 but do not specify why.

Planet Hollywood says Bradix "selflessly and heroically took action, helping to stop the fleeing suspect".

He was arrested a year later at a naval base in Jacksonville, Florida, where officials said he attacked a cab driver, shouted "my life is over", and threatened to kill police, according to court records.

A maroon-colored 2009 Honda Accord came to rest with two of its wheels in the air, leaning on a lamppost and steel barriers meant to block vehicles from getting onto the sidewalk.

Mr Rojas enlisted in the Navy in 2011 and was an electrician's mate fireman apprentice.

Photo taken on May 18, 2017 shows the scene of a vehicle crash incident at Times Square in New York City, the United States.

Alyssa Elsman died Thursday when a man drove his vehicle down the sidewalk for three blocks into the heart of New York City's theater district.

Thursday's mayhem began at noon on a hot, clear day that brought large crowds of people into the streets to enjoy the good weather.

After the auto struck a barricade and stopped, the driver climbed out of his vehicle, Ms Lowe said.

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that President Donald Trump has been apprised of the incident. She works at a school now as a case manager for them trying to find them homes and new jobs and stuff and it's very sad when things like this happen because it doesn't make the case any better. Police said he pointed a kitchen knife at a notary who'd come over to do paperwork, and he accused the notary of stealing his identity. But he was grabbed quickly by bystanders, including a parole officer, who detained him until police arrived. It was unknown if that auto was the one Rojas allegedly drove into Times Square Thursday.

That network of barricades, though, is far from a complete defense.

The driver of the 2009 maroon Honda Accord that tore into the crowd was identified by police as Richard Rojas, a 26-year-old Navy veteran with two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated. Several social media users also alleged Mr Rojas was acting on ISIS instructions for vehicle attacks in built-up areas.

People rushed to help the injured, who were lying on the footpath, .

Australian John Cox was on 42nd Street when the incident happened.

In the Poconos, commuters to and from the city had heard the news.

"It's a really sad scene".
