"American Idol" Reality show is returning to television

Live With Kelly and Ryan

"American Idol", which ended a 15-season run on Fox previous year, will resume on ABC next season.

Entertainment Weekly reported that ABC revived "American Idol", winning the show away from Fox, where it aired its 15 seasons.

"'American Idol' is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon", said Channing Dungey, ABC entertainment president. "ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base".

A host and judges will be announced at a later time.

ABC will debut the competition show sometime during the upcoming TV season, but insiders tell Variety the network is looking to air the show on Sundays in the spring.

Ryan Seacrest has not yet confirmed or denied if he'll be hosting the American Idol reboot, but he's definitely aware that the show is officially returning to TV.

Rumors of Idol's revival have been circulating for months. The show finished the 2015-16 season among the top three programs on Wednesday night in total viewers and adults 18 to 49.

The singing competition, canceled by Fox just last spring, is being resurrected on ABC.

It was based on the United Kingdom format Pop Idol which was created by Simon Fuller for ITV, which in turn was inspired by New Zealand series Popstars, which producer Nigel Lythgoe brought across to the UK.

"I don't know about that part yet", he said. "I said, 'Well, that's kind of good to know, I work here!'" "I had said at the end of the series, 'Goodbye for now, ' hoping somewhere it would come back".

If the show remains in Los Angeles, as expected, Seacrest would have to jet back and forth each week during live Idol episodes. Are you excited about American Idol coming back?
