Anthony Weiner to plead guilty in sexting case, reports say

Former US Rep. Anthony Weiner faces charges in sexting case

Weiner, whose "sexting" scandals led him to resign from Congress and jumpstarted an FBI investigation, will enter a guilty plea to a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor pursuant, to a plea agreement, according to the New York Times. The charge could land Weiner anywhere between zero to 10 years in prison and it is highly likely that he will have to register as a sex offender.

In court, the 52-year-old former Democratic congressman paused repeatedly as he fought back tears and tried to compose himself. He faces between no jail time and ten years at sentencing, it said. "I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse", Weiner said through pauses and bouts of tears in an emotional statement.

Two years later, the Democrat took a crack at reviving his flailing career by running in the NY mayoral race.

The Daily Mail first reported Weiner's sexual messages with the girl in September. Attorney Arlo Devlin-Brown said his client had "made a commitment to make amends". He added that Weiner remains "focused on his recovery".

"Weiner's conduct was not only reprehensible, but a federal crime", Kim said. During the investigation into Weiner's alleged text message to the teen, at least one device had been found to have allegedly been used by both Weiner and his now estranged wife Huma Abedin, Clinton's aide.

As a result, James Comey, then the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced in late October that the agency was reviewing the messages to determine whether to reopen its investigation into Clinton's handling of official correspondence.

That inquiry was brief.

Federal prosecutors in NY said Weiner admitted to sending sexually explicit photos and "directions to engage in sexual conduct" to a 15-year-old girl. He said he ended the habit, but it resurfaced in 2013, leading him to pull out of the race for NY mayor that year.

The Weiner scandal has been a subject of speculation for months as it triggered a chain of events that many Democrats and liberals say contributed to the election of Donald Trump.
