Apple's CEO Reportedly Personally Testing A Glucose Tracking Device

Apple CEO Tim Cook displays his personal Apple Watch to customers at an Apple Store

Apple's chief executive Tim Cook has been seen at the Apple campus wearing a brand new test model of the Apple Watch that monitors blood sugar levels and might transform the lives of diabetics, according to CNBC. Then again, there's no concrete proof or photographic documentation of this alleged wild sighting, so it could still all be a hoax, not to mention an unfinished prototype far from mass production.

The Apple Watch 3 is expected to launch this fall, and this could be one of the highlight features, or at least an optional one. Cook told students at the University of Glasgow in February that he had been wearing a glucose tracker, and that it helped him understand the impact of different foods on his blood sugar levels.

It isn't yet clear if the device will be embedded into a future version of the Apple Watch, or if the finished product will be created to be worn separately. The device also adds substance to previous rumors about Apple hiring a team of biomedical engineers to work on a noninvasive device that can monitor blood sugar levels of diabetic patients. It's part of a broader effort by Apple to play a bigger role in the healthcare industry through technology.

For now, sources speaking to CNBC say the prototype used by Cook was connected to his watch.

Apple's interest in non-invasive glucose monitoring techniques could indeed pave the way for some breakthrough research in treating diabetes and other emerging challenges in life sciences.

For Apple, the value is clear.

Consequently, the Cupertino Company is all set to release some smart bands that could connect to the Apple Watch to monitor blood sugar levels in real time and thereby help its wearer to experience diabetes treatment in a non-invasive style.

Still, there was no word from CNBC's sources on whether Apple might release a glucose tracker and when that could happen.
