Arsene Wenger saddened by criticism from former Arsenal skipper Tony Adams

Arsenal won the league with Arsene Wenger as boss and Tony Adams as captain in 1997-98

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hopes the thorny issue of his future will not prove a distraction when his side attempt to squeeze into the Champions League against Everton on Sunday.

"Arsenal have been actively assessing options for a new sporting director position to potentially work alongside Wenger - and chief executive Ivan Gazidis had told fans that this summer should be a "catalyst for change" - but the Frenchman is adamant that he will not fundamentally alter how he works".

The board may also prefer to keep Wenger on at the club with many of Europe's top mangers already in employment. One of them of course is what is happening with the manager in the future, the players who have to come in and renew contracts and all that.

Adams, who played over 500 games and won four league titles with the Gunners has criticised Wenger's coaching and says that he does not expect to return to the club in a coaching capacity as long as Wenger is in charge. What happens to me after that is less important.

A top three spot would ensure that team of a place in the group stages of the 2017/18 edition of the Champions League while fourth would see them enter a two-leg play-off fixture beforehand.

Everybody will be under scrutiny so you just want the teams like Everton to fight against us, Middlesbrough will fight against Liverpool, Watford will fight against City.

"The Gunners may yet earn an additional shot at qualifying for the Champions League for a 21st consecutive season by forcing a play-off".

Wenger, who brought Adams into the youth set-up as a coach for a short spell a year ago, said the remarks did not cause him pain and said he would rather focus his energies elsewhere.

With his future at Arsenal still undecided, Arsene Wenger has further muddied the waters at the Emirates after he "ridiculed" the idea of working alongside a director of football.

The most important thing is to win the football game (against Chelsea in the FA Cup final next weekend). We are professional and we want to win. "For me it's a subject of no interest and so I would like to dedicate my time to something that is more interesting". "We are on a good run and that's all we can do".

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey has recovered in time for the weekend's clash while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remained on the sidelines with an hamstring injury.

Former captain Tony Adams, now managing relegated LaLiga outfit Granada, is the latest to speak out.

Only three managers will wake tomorrow, on the 282nd and last day of the Premier League season, with their pulse quickened by the heat of competition: Pep Guardiola, Jürgen Klopp and Arsène Wenger.

Asked if he was hurt by Adams' comments, Wenger said: "No". After, the season is not over and we have to focus on the Cup final. It's not like some players have never left the club.
