Chaffetz will resign, raising doubts about Trump probe

Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday he will resign from Congress next month

Utah representative Jason Chaffetz, whose committee chairmanship has tasked him with oversight of the tumultuous Trump administration, announced his intention Thursday to resign from Congress at the end of June.

Herbert added that Chaffetz's resignation and the following clamor "doesn't really affect me politically" - thus he has no conflicts of interests here - and he will simply follow current election law (as near as possible, ) and that all primary voters should decide on their party's candidates. I knew from day one that my service there would not last forever. On Wednesday, he scheduled a hearing for next week in anticipation that Comey might testify.

Comey was sacked last week amid an FBI investigation into whether Trump's presidential campaign associates colluded with Russian Federation to influence the presidential election outcome to benefit him.

Hughes' chief of staff Greg Hartley said in a text Thursday that Hughes "has heard that he (Chaffetz) could be out of office as soon as the end of June".

Since 2015, the Utahn has led the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, a position that gained increasing political visibility throughout the Obama administration.

Chaffetz also said he's not sure the Comey memos are "real".

After Trump won the election, Chaffetz became a lightning rod for criticism that Republicans weren't aggressively policing Trump.

In a statement, Chaffetz said that he had always meant for his time in Congress to be temporary, and that he's looking forward to spending more time with his family. If this is the Chaffetz standard for prosecution-do you see evidence before an investigation has taken place-there's probably a person or two in prison right now who'd like to take advantage of it.

None of the Republicans running for office should expect an endorsement from Chaffetz until a nominee has been selected, he said.

After careful consideration and a long discussion with his wife, Chaffetz, a Republican, wrote in a letter to constituents, "the time has come for us to move on from this part of our life".

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is one of the most senior committee members and has signaled his interest in succeeding Chaffetz as chairman, but it's not clear whether he could win that prized slot.

Gowdy ran the House Select Committee on the investigation into the State Department's handling of the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi.

"I put some things into motion", Chaffetz said on KSL's The Doug Wright Show when asked whether he is still considering leaving Congress early after deciding to not seek re-election 2018.
