Chinese newspaper slams India for OBOR summit boycott

Leaders attending the Belt and Road Forum wave as they pose for a group

"We are of firm belief that connectivity initiatives must be based on universally recognized global norms, good governance, rule of law, openness, transparency and equality", he said in a statement.

Leaders at China's Belt and Road summit on Monday agreed to promote a rules-based, open and multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organisation at its core, according to the summit communique.

Announced by Xi in 2013, the Belt and Road project aims to connect Asia, Europe through a network of roads, railway lines, and ports. On the contrary, the positive response to the initiative is driven by rationality and reality does provide more reasons for supporting the initiative.

Officials from 130 countries including Russian president Vladimir Putin and World Bank president Jim Yong-kim attended the One Belt One Road Forum on the weekend. A high-level European Union diplomat, who spoke to The Guardian on condition of anonymity, said that for Europe, the Belt and Road initiative can only be a success if it's based on transparency and co-ownership.

Since being raised four years ago, the Belt and Road initiative has become clearer and more developed. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a key component of One Belt, One Road - passes through the disputed region of Kashmir, which both India and Pakistan claim in its entirety.

As well as the corridor through Pakistan, India is anxious more broadly about China's economic and diplomatic expansion through Asia, and in particular across countries and waterways that it considers to be its sphere of influence.

While he said "perception can become more powerful than the reality", he added that China "remains a very closed trade and investment market especially when compared to the USA".

For now, China is playing it cool when it comes to India's role in the Belt and Road initiative.

This has led some to speculate that China will emerge as a global leader on fighting climate change, something that Beijing has embraced as the country has taken major strides in cutting emissions and promoting investment in renewable energy. During the Raisina dialogue, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar had said, "China is a country that is very sensitive on matters concerning its we would expect that they would have some understanding of other people's sensitivity about their sovereignty".
