Comey agrees to testify before Senate Intel Committee

James Comey firing overshadows GOP agenda this week

Separately, The Washington Post reported Friday that the FBI investigation into possible co-ordination between Russian Federation and the Trump presidential campaign was moving closer to the White House.

Mark Warner, D-VA, Vice Chairman of the Committee announced Friday that Comey, the embattled former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, has committed to testify in open session before the Committee.

In a move aimed at restoring public faith in the Russian Federation investigation, Rosenstein this week appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to head the probe. "He was insane, a real nut job", Trump said, according to a document summarizing the meeting that a USA official read to the Times. "I faced great pressure because of Russian Federation".

The next day, Trump met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"By grandstanding and politicising the investigation into Russia's actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russian Federation".

Trump has faced a steady flow of controversial revelations over the past 10 days, including that he asked Comey in February to end the FBI's investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. "Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations".

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is sticking by his memo that preceded President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Mr. Spicer, traveling with the president, didn't directly address those allegations, saying in his statement: "As the President has stated before-a thorough investigation will confirm that there was no collusion between the campaign and any foreign entity".

Burr said the committee wants to hear from Comey on his role in the development of the U.S. intelligence agencies' assessment that Russian Federation interfered in last year's election.

Trump has reacted furiously to the appointment of a special counsel, a prosecutor with wide authority to investigate Russia's interference and other potential crimes uncovered.

The Washington Post reported that investigators have identified a current White House aide as a person of interest in the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump and his team planned the trip as an opportunity for the US President to unify Muslim, Jewish and Christian leaders against extremism, a senior administration official said.

"The Committee looks forward to receiving testimony from the former Director on his role in the development of the Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 USA elections, and I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media", said Burr.

Democrats, who have compared the widening scandal to the Watergate break-in and cover-up that brought down Republican former President Richard Nixon in 1974, were quick to pounce on the latest reports.

He said Trump's Oval Office comments amounted to "pretty clear evidence" that his "motive in firing Comey was to obstruct justice". But lawmakers at both congressional sessions expressed frustration that Rosenstein would say little in answer to their questions about his actions - or others' - before Comey's firing.

Moreover, Trump reportedly has kept in touch with at least one former associate who is under active criminal investigation by the FBI.

"Bob Mueller doesn't have, for example, the same broader responsibility to get into the kind of financial entanglements that I have especially focused on", Wyden said.
