Confederate Monument No. 3 Down, but 4th Won't Be So Easy

Workers removing the statue of Confederate Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard on Tuesday

One of the controversial confederate monuments removed from New Orleans could find a new home in Biloxi.

The equestrian statue of Confederate Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard honors the military leader who died in New Orleans in 1893. The city will not release details on when that monument will come down, citing security concerns.

A crane that was expected to eventually lift the statue from its base was moved into position, along with other heavy equipment, after workers cleared the area around the monument.

The Lee monument's removal was believed to pose special challenges because of its location and height. City officials said the removal process will begin at 9 a.m. Friday.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is expected to give a speech marking the removal of the last of the four monuments on Friday afternoon. Recent court rulings cleared the way for the monuments to be removed and relocated after spirited public debate.

The statue of Robert E. Lee is New Orleans is scheduled to be dismantled on Friday. In it, the city says "Once removed, the monuments will be stored in a city owned warehouse until further plans can be developed for a park or museum site where the monuments can be put in a fuller context". It was commissioned by the Jefferson Davis Memorial Association. The statue was dedicated in 1911.

The preparations were reminiscent of those that preceded the relocation of three other statues that Landrieu first called to be removed from public places in July 2015.

Police say the men were arrested Wednesday on a charge of criminal damage to historic buildings or landmarks by defacing with graffiti.

Landrieu also said that the removal would cause some traffic issues with the following street closures: Moss Street between Desaix Boulevard and Esplanade Avenue and North Carrolton Avenue between Esplanade Avenue, and City Park Avenue will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Blanchard tells the paper he went to high school near the park, and that he always found monuments like the one to Beauregard to be unsettling.

The Louisiana Legislature is considering a measure that would hinder local governments from removing war memorials, including those from the Civil War. The bill allows local governments to take down a memorial only if voters approve the action at "an election held for that goal". The proposal passed in a 65-31 vote and heads to the state's Senate.

That's a lesson you can teach that's a better lesson than saying oh we're going to destroy this iconic piece of New Orleans architecture or sculpture in order to try to position the mayor for a presidential race. Dylann Roof, an avowed racist, shot and killed nine black parishioners at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. A public selection committee made up of city officials will make a recommendation for entities to receive and display the statues, with approval by the City Council. A counterprotest was held on Sunday night.
