Donor angry at failure to move Israel embassy

Israeli police: Jordanian stabber shot dead in Jerusalem

After a Fox News reporter said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Trump against the embassy move, the Israeli Prime Minister's office called those claims false and pointed to readouts of Netanyahu's White House visit February 17 that said Netanyahu supported the move.

Israeli and USA teams discussing arrangements for President Trump's visit ran into difficulty after a senior White House official told a member of the Israel team that the Western Wall was part of the West Bank.

Israel captured east Jerusalem - where Palestinians want to establish the capital of a future independent state - from Jordan in 1967 and annexed it, a move not internationally recognized.

Both issues provoked criticism of Trump's White House in Israel as preparations intensified for his visit to the country and the Palestinian territories on May 22 and 23.

The response triggered the "first public dispute" between Tel Aviv and the Trump administration, according to Israeli newspaper, Haaretz.

Donald Trump is set to meet Palestinian and Israeli leaders nearly back-to-back on his first foreign trip as U.S. President.

Trump has reportedly asked Netanyahu to slow Israeli settlement building activity in the West Bank, but the U.S. president has appointed a pro-settlement envoy to Israel, and the White House has failed to denounce plans for new units.

Trump's visit to Israel will take place close to the deadline for him to decide whether to sign a waiver preventing the relocation of the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Palestinian and other Arab leaders have warned the Trump administration that moving the USA embassy to Jerusalem would risk stirring popular anger and possible unrest, as the Palestinians view the city's eastern half as their capital and because of the city's significance to Muslims. "They do not reflect the USA position, and certainly not the President's position".

"From a summary of a meeting between Ambassador Dermer and National Security Advisor-designate Flynn on January 16, 2017 (by Jacob Nagel): '[Dermer] explained why moving the embassy would help advance peace and not the opposite".

The spat came on the day the new United States ambassador to Israel, David Friedman - an orthodox Jew - arrived in the country to take up his position.

Abbas said "it's about time for Israel to end its occupation of our people and our land" - a reference to Jewish settlement building in the West Bank.

"I pledge to you to do all that I can to strengthen and enhance the relationship between our two great nations", he told Rivlin.

On the campaign trail, Trump voiced solidly pro-Israel positions.

In a move unrecognized pretty much by the rest of the world, Israel declared Jerusalem al-Quds its capital in 1980s.

The former bankruptcy lawyer has expressed scepticism over the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the basis of years of U.S. peace efforts.
