Embattled, Trump laments 'witch hunt' as divisive and distracting

Former FBI chief Robert Mueller has been appointed for the post which has been welcomed by politicians of both the parties.

The McCaskill-Durbin claims are significant because White House communications officials had originally said Trump fired Comey on the basis of Rosenstein's memo.

President Trump denied all the allegations with him connecting to Russian hackers and others during the infamous election which saw him winning in a thin margin.

Mr Trump said in a statement on Wednesday night (local time) that "a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity".

"No. No. Next question", Mr Trump told a news conference when asked if he "in any way, shape or form" ever urged Mr Comey, whom he fired on May 9, to close down the investigation into Michael Flynn.

"Director Comey was very unpopular - with most people", Mr. Trump said flatly, an assertion that has been contradicted by some within the bureau.

The president also made his ire known over Twitter, earlier Thursday.

Six of the previously undisclosed contacts described to Reuters were phone calls between Mr Sergei Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the USA, and Trump advisers, including Mr Flynn, Mr Trump's first national security adviser, three current and former officials said.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham took it a step further, saying that the Justice Department's look into the Trump campaign's possible Russian Federation ties is "now considered a criminal investigation".

With nearly no warning, the Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller Wednesday as special counsel in charge of the bureau'... "So I think the biggest legal change seems to be that Mr. Mueller is going to proceed forward with the idea that this as criminal investigation instead of a counter intelligence investigation".

Since Comey's firing on May 9, the calls for Rosenstein to appoint a special counsel have intensified, especially from Democratic lawmakers who believe he can longer be impartial in the Russian Federation investigation, given his role in the firing. Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri also told reporters that Rosenstein said he'd learned Trump planned to dismiss Comey before writing his memo.

Trump referred to Comey's testimony at a recent Capitol Hill hearing, after which the Justice Department ended up having to amend part of his testimony regarding last year's probe of Hillary Clinton's email practices. Rosenstein told lawmakers he didn't want to infringe on newly appointed special counsel Robert Mueller, whom Rosenstein named this week to lead the probe of possible Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation. I think it divides the country, I think we have a very divided country because of that and many other things. And during a lunch with reporters, he said the special counsel appointment is bad for the country. The president's hostility toward a full independent investigation is troubling. Now Mueller will have almost unfettered access to witnesses and information, and the ability to bring criminal charges.

(Remember the incidental prosecution of Scooter Libby?) The investigation will likely turn up little to no evidence supporting the collusion conspiracy, but if Mueller doesn't nail somebody for something, leftists will then demand his head.
