Ex-FBI chief Comey to testify in US Congress

Donald Trump impeachment calls are mounting

Washington, May 20 Sacked FBI Director James Comey has agreed to testify before a Congressional committee in an open session about alleged Russian interference in the U.S. presidential polls a year ago.

Several news reports have emerged in the wake of Comey's firing, alleging that Trump demanded "loyalty" from the former FBI director, asked him to "let" the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn go, and told Russian officials that Comey was "crazy" and a "nut job".

Earlier Friday, the New York Times reported that Trump told visiting Russian officials in a May 10 White House meeting that he had fired Comey because "he was insane, a real nut job". The investigation is now in the hands of a special counsel, as well as multiple congressional committees.

Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence will schedule the open hearing for sometime after Memorial Day.

The reports, emerging just as Trump jetted off to Saudi Arabia on his first foreign trip as president, were likely to extend the turmoil engulfing his administration since the May 9 firing of former FBI Director James Comey. The Washington Post reported that a senior Trump administration official is now a "person of interest" in the Russian Federation probe.

Testifying in an open session, rather than a closed one, ensures that Comey's testimony will be public.

While the case began quietly last July as an effort to determine whether any Trump associates coordinated with Russian operatives to meddle in the presidential election campaign, the investigative work now being done by the Federal Bureau of Investigation also includes determining whether any financial crimes were committed by people close to the president.

Flynn discussed USA sanctions against Russian Federation with Russia's ambassador to the United States during the month before President Donald Trump took office, and he withheld that fact from even Vice President Mike Pence.

House members leaving a briefing by the deputy attorney general on the probe of connections between Russian Federation and Donald Trump's presidential campaign say they're frustrated at not getting answers.

"No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly", he said.

A small group of lawmakers known as the Gang of Eight were notified of the change in tempo and focus in the investigation at a classified briefing on Wednesday evening, the Post reported, citing the people familiar with the matter.

White House hopes that Trump could leave scandalous allegations at home were crushed in a one-two punch of revelations that landed shortly after his departure.

Trump, who has embraced what he describes as an "America First" approach to US foreign policy and global trade, is expected to be welcomed warmly by leaders in Saudi Arabia and Israel. "It makes it very clear that what Donald Trump was trying to do was to end the Russian investigation".

White House spokesman Sean Spicer called the president's rhetoric part of his deal-making. Mr Trump wrote on Thursday morning.

Trott says Maryland Democratic congressman Elijah Cummings asked something like, "So you woke up one morning and made a decision to write a memo?"
