Ex-FBI chief given sweeping power to lead Trump-Russia probe

"With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign and the Obama administration, there was never a special councel appointed", Trump said in another tweet.

Here are six members of the GOP who seem to have turned on President Trump.

The then-deputy attorney general named the special counsel who ran the Plame probe.

On Thursday morning, Trump took to Twitter to lash out against the appointment, accusing former President Barack Obama and opponent Hillary Clinton of committing "illegal acts" and whining that he was the victim of an unprecedented witch hunt.

This week, news reports alleged that Trump had previously tried to pressure Comey into backing off inquiries into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

It later emerged that Comey had made notes of his meetings with Trump, who reportedly asked him to quash an investigation into Flynn's contacts with foreign governments.

Known for his independence, Mr Mueller was originally sworn in as FBI Director in the days before the 9/11 attacks but threatened to resign in 2004, along with Mr Comey who was serving as Deputy Attorney General at the time, over plans to revive warrantless NSA surveillance without any legal protections.

In a statement Wednesday evening, the White House said the investigation would find no evidence of collusion.

Texas Republican Mike Conaway and California Democrat Adam Schiff say they will continue to work with the FBI as the investigation moves forward.

Trump's Russian Federation investigation has taken over the cover of the new Time magazine. The history of partisanship in recent congressional investigations is simply too great - up to and including Rep. Devin Nunes' cartoonish rush to the White House to share revelations he had gotten the day before on a visit to the White House - and the president's willingness to meddle is too apparent. Many who admired Rosenstein were stunned that he would let himself be used this way; I argued last week that "if he cares at all about rehabilitating the reputation he built, Rosenstein has one option: He can appoint a serious, independent and above-reproach special counsel - the sort of person Rosenstein was seen as, until this week - to continue the Russian Federation probe". If lawmakers believe a president is guilty of what the US Constitution calls "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors", they may initiate articles of impeachment. "His reaction was 'extremely measured, ' another said".

He didn't ask the White House for approval; he just pulled the trigger and told the administration it had to deal with it.

The message from Trump came the same day that House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and ranking member Elijah Cummings (D-MA) asserted in a press conference that Flynn had not disclosed payments from Russian Federation and Turkey when he filed paperwork to renew his security clearance. Just ask James Comey.

The term "special prosecutor'" in the United States context harks back to the Watergate scandal, when President Nixon's attorney general appointed Archibald Cox to lead an independent investigation.

Rosenstein, who at his confirmation hearing would not commit to a special counsel appointment and who inherited the probe following Sessions' recusal, seemed to acknowledge the public outcry by calling Mueller's selection "necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome".
