Facebook Lied About WhatsApp & Misused User Data

The social media behemoth gave misleading information at the time it took over Whats App in 2014 said the European Commission

European Union antitrust regulators on Thursday said they would fine Facebook €110 million for providing misleading information over its purchase of messaging service WhatsApp in 2014.

The EC said that Facebook said it could not match its user accounts automatically on its platform with those of WhatsApp. The fine stands as one of the most significant regulatory penalties that has ever been posed against Facebook.

The decision taken by the EC sends a signal to other companies of the need to comply with all merger rules that the European Union has, including an obligation to provide information that is correct, said Margrethe Vestager the EC Competition Commissioner.

"The Commission must be able to take decisions about mergers' effects on competition in full knowledge of accurate facts". Facebook, specialists say, is just the most recent in a long line of Silicon Valley organizations to face European administrative outrage, however this time, the focus is going to be majorly on the amount of online information accumulated, including data that Facebook gathers on both its clients and nonusers through external sites.

The fine was imposed after the commission learnt that Facebook was aware in 2014 that linking users' profiles with their WhatsApp phone numbers was possible but had made contradictory public statements at the time of the takeover. "Several cases that will start coming", Gry Hasselbalch, co-founder of Data Ethics, told Al Jazeera.

However, in August 2016, the Californian business modified WhatsApp's confidentiality policy, resulting in the data collected with this application being used to suggest an ad for other group applications such as Facebook or Instagram.

On 3 October 2014, the European Commission, the guardian of competition in Europe, had given the green light for the ultimate acquisition of WhatsApp from Facebook for $ 22 billion. "This decision shows it is actually a problem". "The errors we made in our 2014 filings were not intentional and the Commission has confirmed that they did not impact the outcome of the merger review".

In this context, the fine on Facebook reiterates that the Commission is keeping a very close eye on whether companies are complying with the procedural rules, and serves as a stern reminder for merging parties (and indeed intervening third parties) of the need to provide accurate and reliable information to the Commission. The commission said that since Facebook cooperated throughout the inquiry, the fine was reduced.
