Family of musician Chris Cornell disputes he killed himself

Brad devastated by deaths of close pals

The Cornell family released a statement on Friday, noting that they are "disturbed" at reports the Soundgarden frontman, 52, "intentionally and knowingly" committed suicide.

Cornell, who died after performing with Soundgarden on Wednesday night, was on a solo acoustic tour at the time of his Wilkes-Barre appearance.

Vicky Cornell, Cornell's wife, said that when she spoke to her husband after the Detroit show, he told her he may have taken "an extra Ativan or two".

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement: "The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide".

Another spokesman for the Detroit Police Department earlier told the Free Press that Cornell was found unresponsive on the floor of his hotel room with a band around his neck.

His representative, Brian Bumbery called the musician's death "sudden and unexpected" and said in a statement that the family would be "working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause".

Pop legend Elton John said he was "shocked and saddened" by the death of Chris Cornell, calling him "a great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man". Cornell, 52, who gained fame as the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, died at a hotel in Detroit and police said Thursday, May 18, 2017, that his death is being investigated as a possible suicide.

"Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions".

Asked about his past addictions, Mr Cornell often remarked that drug problems were overlooked among non-famous people. He told Rolling Stone in a 1994 interview that he started using drugs at age 13, and was kicked out of school at 15.

"Chris Cornell he's like 12 years younger than me, he's my friend and we'd go out together for dinner".

A panicked Karayiannis said she then contacted security to check on Cornell at the MGM Grand Detroit.

He also released solo albums, and Nielsen Music said as a band member and solo act, the singer sold nearly 15 million albums and 8.8 million digital songs in the U.S.

Grief-stricken Chris Cornell fans left flowers at memorials across Seattle for the musician whose forceful, somber songs helped cement the city's place in rock history.

Soundgarden had one of the heaviest sounds in grunge with trappings of heavy metal, even though Cornell cited The Beatles, to whom he listened constantly as a child, as his biggest influence.
