Ford Offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto Update to 2016 Owners

Ford brings Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to its 2016 fleet

Starting today, anyone who owns one of Ford's 2016 vehicles with the SYNC 3 infotainment system can get a software update that will enable support for both Android Auto as well as its main rival, Apple's Carplay. The massive update will be available for some 800,000 vehicles.

Ford auto owners can download a free, over-the-air update via Wi-Fi, use USB, or visit their dealer.

For CarPlay, users will still also need to upgrade their vehicle's USB hub to make this work (which will also incur a dealer visit and a cost), but for those on Android, all that's required is a simple software installation.

"Our SYNC 3 software platform was created to be easy to update so we can get our customers the latest and greatest features, functionally and security enhancements", said Don Butler, executive director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services.

This is Ford's first Wi-Fi OTA update.

Customers can update their software by visiting owner.ford.com to download and install with a USB drive, or by visiting a dealership. With a simplified interface, large touch targets, Google voice search and easy-to-use voice controls, Android Auto is created to minimize distraction while on the road.

If you're feeling "with it" technologically, it's also available via Ford's first-ever Wi-Fi update. Customers will also now be able to enable automatic updates, which will have the system search for updates periodically and install them when found. Android Auto is supported for smartphones running Android 5.0 and higher, while CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or later, updated to iOS 7.1 or higher.
