Former Fox News chief Roger Ailes dead at 77

Former Fox News chief executive Roger Ailes has died, his wife said in a statement Thursday morning.

The network he helped found in 1996 cited a statement released by his family confirming the late media mogul's death.

Gabriel Sherman, a former media reporter at the Observer, first reported on sexual harassment allegations against Ailes in his 2014 book The Loudest Voice in the Room-a female producer who had applied to work at NBC said Ailes would give her an extra $100 a week "if you agree to have sex with me whenever I want".

In a tweet on Thursday, Bush said, "He wasn't ideal, but Roger Ailes was my friend & I loved him".

The controversy really gained steam in July 2016, when Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against Ailes alleging sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

More than 20 women came forward before his death to accuse Ailes of sexual harassment, prompting Ailes to resign from Fox.

Ailes would go on to work with politicians such as Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush before turning his attention to television with a stint at CNBC from 1993 to 1996. He will be remembered by the many people on both sides of the camera he discovered, nurtured and promoted. Ailes denied the allegations, saying the reason her contract was not renewed was due to "disappointingly low ratings".

"You don't get President Trump without Roger Ailes", CNN political analyst Julian Zelizer said.

Other GOP lawmakers praised Ailes for his transformative impact on news and politics and providing a platform for conservatives.

The Fox co-founder, a consultant to Republican presidents and widely credited with leading a revival of the United States conservative movement, was ousted from the network a year ago under the cloud of a series of sexual harassment allegations.

Fox anchor Bill Hemmer, looking shaken, announced Ailes' death to his audience, ending his brief report by saying, softly, "Wow!"

And he made a point to smash the haters who were playing "checkers" while Ailes was "playing Chess 5 steps ahead at a whole other level".

Fox relentlessly told its viewers that mainstream outlets are biased, while its take on the news was "fair and balanced", priming the Trump voter to believe his spin on the frightful media.

"RIP Roger Ailes a good friend, great American and communications genius @StoneColdTruth", - author and political adviser Roger Stone.

"He has dramatically and forever changed the political and the media landscape singlehandedly for the better", Hannity tweeted. "In addition, Roger was a great patriot who never ceased fighting for his beliefs".

The dark cloud that Ailes resigned under did little to stem the outpouring of grief from his former Fox News colleagues Thursday morning.

The Left would command a monopoly control of the so-called "news" media but for the Fox News Channel, and FNC would not exist but for him.
