Indian migrant worker dies after leaving Qatar World Cup venue

Qatar Builds Air Conditioned Stadium for 2022 World Cup

Migrant laborers working on stadiums for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are still subject to abuse and exploitation, Amnesty International says.

Kumar died in hospital of a cardiac arrest.

An urgent rethink is needed to prevent labour abuse becoming the legacy of the 2022 World Cup. The authorities have also denied reports that it is the working condition that has led to his death.

Al Thawadi is the Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), the organization responsible for the infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup.

The rights group on Friday (19 May) said conditions of migrants living in squalid condition and working without proper access to food and water, or shelter from the sun, still continue.

Nasser Al-Khater, a senior figure with the body organising Qatar's World Cup, also said that for the first time in tournament history numerous fans would come from outside Europe and South America.

The Gulf Arab Kingdom says it is implementing labour reforms and a year ago hired a British consulting firm to assess working conditions on stadiums in an effort to improve transparency.

It said Qatar's recent partnering with a university to improve workers' nutrition showed a commitment to the well-being of World Cup workers. "Our sympathies are with his family at this time", it said in an email statement to Reuters.

Pictures of the very first stadium, the Khalifa International, have surfaced online and many have praised its design.

Qatar's government has denied claims there are higher instances of heart attacks among construction workers and does not publish independently verified statistics on worker-related injuries and fatalities.

Qatar Football Association (QFA) president Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani added: "Khalifa International Stadium is close to Qatari hearts and has seen some of Qatar's biggest sporting occasions over the years since it was first launched in 1976".

So far, two people have died while working on stadium sites, including a British man who fell to his death at Khalifa Stadium.
