Inspired doctors successfully carried out India's first womb transplant at Pune hospital

Country’s first womb transplant surgery today

India's first womb transplant is about to take place at a Pune hospital where a woman is donating her womb to her 21-year-old daughter, who's unable to conceive.

Pune (Maharashtra), May 19 (IANS) Doctors on Friday declared the country's first uterus (womb) transplant on a 21-year-old woman successful, but said the patient is under observation and the next two days are crucial.

"It is first uterine transplant in India", Dr Puntambekar said.

The team of doctors headed by Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, a cancer surgeon, is now performing the second uterine transplant at their 100-bed Pune facility.

The hospital has been preparing for womb transplants over the past few months and recipients were made to undergo ovulation stimulation through IVF. "It was an eight and half hour of surgery".

It is however unclear if the patient will conceive. But will have to continue to take immuno-suppressant drugs for the rest of her life to prevent her body from rejecting the uterus.

"What is planned in Pune is a risky escapade of surgical cowboys wanting to be the first in their country and to get (worldwide) publicity and fame easy", Dr Mats Brännström, who led the world's first womb transplant in Sweden in 2012, told Hindustan Times. He reportedly added, "What is planned in Pune is a unsafe escapade of surgical cowboys wanting to be the first in their country and to get publicity and fame easy".

The surgery has opened up another way to motherhood besides surrogacy or adoption for Indian women who do not have a uterus, or who have a uterus that does not function. While the country has been slightly behind the world average in terms of organ transplants, it's emerging as an efficient and qualitative medical destination for western population. The most common organ transplanted in India is the kidney, followed by lungs, pancreas and heart.

The lead surgeon, Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar, said it would be at least a year before the daughter can attempt to have a baby. "That is the great difference".
