Jared Kushner's Family Banned Journalists While Pitching 'Golden Visas' For Chinese Investors

The sister of White House aide Jared Kushner leveraged her brother's name in a sales pitch to Chinese investors, on behalf of the family's real estate venture.

Nicole Kushner Meyer, Jared's sister and a principal in the family-run business, was in a ballroom at Beijing's Ritz-Carlton hotel on Saturday asking a roomful of wealthy Chinese investors to consider investing $500,000 apiece in a New Jersey luxury apartment complex overlooking the Hudson River across from lower Manhattan. The New York Times reports that Meyer even said this development "means a lot to me and my entire family", which could easily be taken as a subtle hint that Kushner, and therefore Trump, want to get this done. That was not Ms. Meyer's intention.

A property developer owned by relatives of the U.S. president's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner has apologised for touting the Kushner connection at an investor presentation in China. The pitch would reportedly take advantage of a USA visa program that, according to Bloomberg, has benefited both the Trump and Kushner real estate businesses in the past.

The programme offers foreign nationals permanent residency - commonly known as a green card - in exchange for investments of at least half a million dollars in a USA business that must also create 10 American jobs.

Attendees were reassured by a United States lawyer that despite his tough talk on immigration, Trump himself was a key decision-maker for EB-5 policy and was unlikely to make any changes to it in the near future - making it a safe path to U.S. residency. He insisted Kushner has complied with all ethics rules by disassociating himself from the company.

But Washington University law professor Kathleen Clark says the questions about Kushner's investors are not limited to just that one building.

Saturday's event, which was organized by Chinese immigration company Qiaowai, was held to raise money for 1 Journal Square, a $976.4 million residential and commercial project.

The company also featured a photo of President Trump on a slide at the event that said "key decision makers" on the EB-5 programme, CNN reported.

While some US Congress members have been calling for changes to, or full expiration of, the EB-5 programme for several years, legislation signed by Trump last week keeps the programme intact until September 30.

But Kushner remains connected to his company, which has continued to seek investment from China despite Jared's role in the Trump administration's China policy. ObamaCare repeal throws curve ball into tax reform Dem renews call to kill visa program after Kushner controversy Feinstein: Comey had more than two options on Clinton email announcement MORE (D-Calif.) said Monday that the EB-5 visa program, which woos foreign investors to fund United States infrastructure projects with the promise of eventual citizenship, should end. The visa program is so popular with China's wealthy elites that it's commonly referred to as the "golden visa".

An attorney representing Kushner told the WSJ that "the Cadre stake is described in a revised version of his disclosure form that will be made public after it has been certified by ethics officials" and that he has "resigned from Cadre's board, assigned his voting rights and reduced his ownership share".

Jared Kushner had been listed as a manager of several entities related to the project as of January, the New York Times reported.

The programme designates private entities including property developers as "regional centres", which are expected to create jobs with the projects they undertake with money they collect from foreign investors.

The EB-5 visa is, in theory, a win-win for everyone.
