Justice Department appoints special counsel in Russia investigation

Trump and Netanyahu shake hands during a joint news conference at the White House in February

Appointing former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate whether or not Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 US presidential election is harmful to the nation, President Donald Trump said on May 18.

Members of Louisiana's U.S. Congressional delegation said Wednesday that they wanted more investigation into this week's bombshell report that fired FBI director James Comey wrote in a memo that President Donald Trump had asked him to back off an investigation into the president's former national security adviser.

Mr Trump has endured a week of tumult at the White House after he fired the head of the FBI, James Comey, and then discussed sensitive national security information about Islamic State with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Donald Trump embarks on his first trip overseas as president today amid growing controversy at home over his firing of former FBI Director James B. Comey and the special counsel probe of Russian interference and potential connections to Trump aides. Subsequent reports by the New York Times revealed that Trump had pressured Comey for loyalty and asked him to curtail the FBI's investigation.

Putin, who still hopes Moscow can fix battered ties with the United States despite a deepening political scandal in the United States related to Trump's purported Russian Federation ties, said Moscow had rated Lavrov's meeting with Trump highly.

Warner would not say if Comey accepted the invitation.

"Zero", Trump said, adding, "My total priority, believe me, is the United States of America".

Comey kept memos of conversations he had with the president, the Times reported.

Vox's Matt Yglesias wrote Tuesday night about the signs that the Republican wall around Trump and Russian Federation was showing signs of cracking. Sen.

Hours after the report came out, GOP House Oversight Committee chairman Jason Chaffetz demanded that the Federal Bureau of Investigation turn over any and all "memoranda, notes, summaries and recordings" that the Federal Bureau of Investigation may have in its possession. The president's anger contrasted with a more measured written statement released by the White House on Wednesday evening, when he declared that a thorough investigation would find "no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity".

Putin also said that the scandal with that secret information was an act of "political schizophrenia".

Does this rise to the level of criminal obstruction of justice?

Republican Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Flynn's lawyer told the committee he would not honor the panel's subpoena seeking relevant documents.

"We've made it very clear", Spicer said. It simply means that the House of Representatives will bring charges against the President.
