LeGarrette Blount explains why he left Patriots for Eagles

NFL Free Agency 20 Best Players Still Available on Free Agent Market

"I definitely want to make sure the young guys stay on the right track", Blount said Thursday.

So what gives? Why are the Patriots the Patriots?

On Wednesday, LeGarrette Blount signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"This is a flawless fit for me", Blount told the media Thursday in his introductory news conference with the Eagles. "I split time with Stevan Ridley, I split time with Cadillac Williams". (The Eagles) have a culture of their own.

What does this say about the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick and the tremendous amount of equity that they have built up with this fan base that they just let their starting running back walk out the door for a little over $2 million and fans aren't batting an eyelash over it? And they're a really good team. Blount has 46 career receptions and one receiving touchdown in seven National Football League seasons, including seven catches for 38 yards last season for the Patriots.

"This is a flawless fit for me", Blount said to reporters.

"Tom is an unbelievable player. He's a smart player, and when he's out there, he demands a lot of respect from any team you're playing against". "I gotta go out there and learn the offense, learn the playbook", Blount said. "He has all the tools that are needed, and all the "grind" that is needed, and he has the mindset to maximize his ability, if he just continues to work hard".

Having a bell-cow back figures to help that process along.

In addition to Blount, the Eagles also upgraded the offense through free agency by signing wide receivers Alshon Jeffrey and Torrey Smith to go with Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor and Dorial Green-Beckham.

When asked about the history of Philly sports, Blount said he wants to be remembered as one of the greats. So I want to be a part of that. I like the way they play ball.

Blount is used to winning but isn't anxious about being a Band-Aid in a rebuilding project.

Despite the Jekyll and Hyde-like tendencies when it comes to roster building, Blount sees a team ready to compete. "No team is going out there expecting to not win". "We feel good about the depth and competition that we have created at the running back position and we are looking forward to getting the guys out on the field next week for OTAs (Organized Team Activities)". Although Schrager emphasized that there are not many players who left Foxborough and achieved success with different teams. "So I think that plays a big factor in it".

"New England doesn't always have a fullback", said Blount, who rushed for a career-high 1,161 yards last season on a career-high 299 carries, with the Pats missing their other top back, injured former Eagle Dion Lewis, until late in the season.

Blount joins a cast of running backs that includes Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Byron Marshall and rookies Donnel Pumphrey and Corey Clement.
