Macron's first non-Europe trip focuses on fighting extremism

New French Foreign Minister Jean Yves le Drian right and new Deputy Minister in charge of European Affairs Marielle de Sarnez arrive for the first weekly cabinet meeting under new French President Emmanuel Macron Thursday

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, is due to travels today to Mali to meet with some France´s military officers who are serving overseas, a trip that has sparked off lots of criticism by the number of journalists who were covering such an event. France's new president Emmanuel Macron has chosen for his first offic.

According to French scholars Emmanuel Todd and Hervé Le Bras, zombie Catholicism is commonly seen in areas of France such as Macron's Brittany, where the religion appears to have fallen dormant but still remains active in the collective consciousness.

"The Barkhane operation will only stop when there is no more Islamist terrorism in the region", Macron told journalists while visiting French troops stationed in Mali.

Le Pen, Macron's rival in the second round of the presidential election, visited Russian Federation a few weeks before the vote for a highly publicized meeting with Putin.

Macron added that the terror threat in West Africa is "clearly a risk for Europe". The Elabe poll showed that although a majority supported Macron's unprecedented decision to form a government from a mix of ministers from the left, right and centre - with half the appointments coming from civil society non-politicians - Macron himself and his rightwing prime minister, Edouard Philippe, were beginning their terms with the lowest public confidence levels of any new French leaders in the past 20 years.

Macron, a newcomer to global diplomacy, put counter-terrorism at the top of his security priorities during the election campaign, vowing to strengthen support for West African allies. He was greeted by Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and ranks of troops. The rest of his day there Friday will be devoted nearly entirely to familiarizing himself with French troops who are combating West African extremist groups.

Aside, Mali, the 3,000-strong force is fighting insurgents in the entire Sahel region comprising Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, Mauritania.

He also will have lunch with troops, tour a surgical unit, have a briefing on military operations and give a speech to French forces.

Some French political reporters said that Macron's office called their media organization to designate specific journalists who will be able to cover Macron's first trip outside Europe, scheduled in Mali on Friday.

The new president discussed the issue with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin this week, during his first visit to a foreign leader since taking power.

Nineteen French personnel have been killed in the mission since 2013, most recently including a soldier in eastern Mali in early April.

While France would continue to shoulder the military burden of fighting militants in north and west Africa, Macron said Germany and other European nations could do more to help with both military and development aid.
