NHS systems returning to normal after cyber attack

Worldwide ransomware cyberattacks What we know

The Mid Essex Hospital Trust, which runs St Peter's Hospital in Maldon, Broomfield Hospital, St Michael's Hospital in Braintree and Christchurch in Chelmsford, worked across the weekend to get affected systems back online.

Throughout the weekend, IT experts across the world have been working around the clock to try to undo damage caused by the ransomware and installing security patches on vulnerable machines to try to prevent the virus infecting more systems.

I am anxious about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn on their machines on Monday morning.

However, Wainwright said so far "remarkably few" payments had been made by the victims of the attack.

Concerns were raised more NHS services could be affected on Monday, but Kent's hospital trusts confirmed they had not been targeted in the scam, thought to have accessed computers via email.

There have been calls in Britain for an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Friday's major incident, with the United Kingdom government and NHS chiefs facing questions over their preparedness and the robustness of vital systems.

Friday's extortion attack, which locked up computers and held users' files for ransom, is believed to be the biggest of its kind ever recorded.

It also asked patients with pre-booked GP appointments to "please bring with you any medications, letters or paperwork you already have".

Europol, the EU's law enforcement agency, has called the cyber attack the "largest ransomware attack observed in history". However, that patch was only for versions of Windows still supported by the software vendor - but Microsoft on 13 May also released patches for out-of-support versions of Windows affected by the vulnerability.

Specifically pointing to US intelligence agencies, Smith said the worldwide hack "provides yet another example of why the stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments is such a problem".

"We would like to extend our thanks to our staff for the hard work they have done to ensure patient care has been prioritised during this difficult time, and to our patients for their understanding".
