President Trump and Saudi King Salman meet in Riyadh

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump wave as they board Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base Md. Friday

Trump is the first U.S. president to choose a Muslim-majority nation for his first stop overseas, and his aides have said the decision was meant to rebut notions that Trump is anti-Muslim.

The first United States lady, Melania Trump, will not be forced to dress conservatively in Saudi Arabia, the first stop of her husband's tour in the Middle East and Europe.

In addition to Saudi Arabia, the Trump delegation also will visit Jerusalem, the Vatican, Brussels and Sicily before heading back to Washington.

Earlier, Trump waved as he stood atop stairs on Air Force One that had been rolled to the side of the official presidential aircraft as it landed. The 81-year-old King Salman, who used a cane for support, was brought to the steps of the plane on a golf cart.

On his Saudi trip, Trump has said he will ask Muslim leaders "to fight hatred and extremism and embrace a peaceful future for their faith".

A few hours later, Trump tweeted for the first time on worldwide soil as president, writing "Great to be in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia". "I just fired the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Now, as Trump lands here in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, he appears to be looking to reset relations with the Muslim world. He also told them that firing Comey had "taken off" the "great pressure" he was feeling from the investigation, the Times reported.

Robert Mueller, himself a former FBI director, has now been appointed as special counsel to oversee the investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump presidential election campaign.

Still, Jasser is anxious that the Trump Team has been talking up an "Arab NATO", because unlike many Middle Eastern nations, NATO member nations are democracies. Billboards featuring images of Trump and the king dotted the highways of Riyadh, emblazoned with the motto "Together we prevail".

On the drive to the Ritz hotel where Trump is staying, King Salman rode with the president in the heavily armored presidential limousine nicknamed "the Beast".

Trump and his motorcade then made their way to his hotel for a few hours of downtime before beginning the day's meetings.

Trump is also scheduled to meet with leaders of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council and have lunch with leaders of more than 50 Muslim countries.

Melania Trump wore a black pantsuit with a golden belt and did not cover her head for the arrival, consistent with custom for foreign dignitaries visiting Saudi Arabia. He was joined by First Lady Melania Trump.

"Israel is an important American ally, but in recent years we haven't always treated them that way", he said adding that it was time to renew this friendship. "They don't have to worry about that as much with President Trump, who is not prioritizing human rights or democracy". "We are not here to lecture - to tell other peoples how to live, what to do or who to be", he is expected to say, according to the draft speech.

In a potentially controversial sweetener for Saudi Arabia, US officials said the Trump administration plans to announce $110 billion (£84 billion) in advanced military equipment sales and training to the kingdom during the president's trip. The package includes tanks, combat ships, missile defense systems, radar and communications and cybersecurity technology.

Saturday night, he'll attend a royal banquet at Murabba Palace followed by a tour of the National Museum. Trump is slated to hold meetings with the Saudi monarch ahead of a Sunday conference with leaders from across the Arab world.

The centerpiece of Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia will be a speech Sunday at the Arab-Islamic-American summit.

Quoting the Koran and calling attention to Islam's contributions to the world, President Barack Obama in 2009 addressed thousands of young students at Cairo University in Egypt in an attempt to turn the page on the policies of his predecessor that saw tens of thousands of USA troops deployed to Muslim countries. Arab leaders often view those topics as moralizing by the U.S. Instead, Trump promotes the more limited goals of peace and stability.

Saudi Arabia has already been enthusiastic about Trump's presidency after seeing his predecessor Barack Obama as too soft on its arch regional foe Iran and cool towards Washington's bilateral relationship with Riyadh, a mainstay of the Middle East's security balance.
