Prince's Six Siblings Become Heirs to His Estate

Rona Ambrose won't vote for her replacement

A Minnesota judge ruled Friday that Prince's six siblings are the heirs to his estate, a key step in the long battle over the pop legend's fortune.

Carver County District Judge Kevin Eide declared that Prince's sister, Tyka Nelson, and Prince's five half-siblings are his heirs: Omarr Baker, Alfred Jackson, Sharon Nelson, Norrine Nelson, and John R. Nelson.

There are people who filed appeals after their claims of heirship were rejected. Eide ruled that he will consider rejected claimants should they be sent back to him by appellate courts.

Eide stated that the estate will not be distributed without a court order, and he's making sure that the distribution won't affect the other claims.

Lawyers for those six had pressed the court, saying any further delays will increase costs to the estate and impede its efficient administration. And until the appeals are resolved, Eide said the siblings won't be able to collect anything without his approval. Because Prince did not leave a will, federal and state estate taxes are expected to consume about half the value.

Since then, the estate has been tied up in probate court as dozens of would-be heirs (and their lawyers) sought to get a piece of the estate by claiming to be Prince's secret wife, secret child, secret sibling or some other more distant relation.

Universal earlier this year announced with fanfare that it had secured the rights to Prince's catalog after the mid-1990s, when the singer exited rival label Warner, as well as unspecified recordings from Prince's earlier heyday.

Prince died in April 2016 at his home inside Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota, of an accidental overdose of Fentanyl.

The filing also confirms that L. Londell McMillan, one of two former special music-industry advisers to the estate, will be the business adviser to three of the heirs: John, Norrine and Sharon Nelson.

Prince reconciled with Warner late in his life and the label next month will put out a new edition of his icon 1984 album-soundtrack "Purple Rain", complete with previously unreleased tracks.
