Prosecutors: Times Square driver wanted to 'kill them all'

This tilted red sedan drove into a crowded Times Square injuring several and killing one

NEW YORK (AP) - A man charged with slamming his speeding auto into pedestrians in Times Square, killing a teenager and injuring almost two dozen people, said he wanted to "kill them all" and police should have shot him to stop him, a prosecutor revealed Friday.

Rojas returned from his Navy service with a drinking problem and had posted "crazy stuff" on social media, said a friend, Harrison Ramos, speaking to Reuters outside the apartment building where Rojas lives in New York City's Bronx borough.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stressed that there was no indication the incident was an act of terror. Shoes were scattered on the sidewalk. Security camera footage showed the vehicle slam into pedestrians who moments earlier were ambling along, some carrying shopping bags and others pushing baby strollers.

The carnage happened in a part of the city that has always been considered a possible terrorist target because of its large crowds, a concern that became elevated after the September 11 attacks and compounded by recent attacks in England, France and Germany in which vehicles ploughed through crowds of pedestrians. Twenty-two people were hurt - one of them Elsman's 13-year-old sister. "He didn't stop. He just kept going", Lowe said. He fought with officers who then handcuffed him, authorities said.

Times Square averaged about 360,000 daily visitors in April, according to a tally by the Times Square Alliance, making it one of the most visited locations in the world.

The streets around Times Square are heavily patrolled by police, some on horseback. Many sidewalks are lined with barricades and planters to deter vehicle attacks.

Friends say Rojas told people he works in real estate, but it's unclear if he had any kind of realtors license, Carlin reported. Police do not suspect a link to terrorism and the driv. The driver has previously been charged and arrested with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon for threatening a man.

The US Navy said he served from September 2011 to May 2014, reaching the rank of electrician's mate fireman apprentice.

Navy records also show he spent two months at a naval brig in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2013. "I wanted to kill them", law enforcement sources quoted the accused as telling police following his arrest, the BBC wrote.

The crash occurred outside the headquarters of the Reuters news agency, 3 Times Square.

"It appears to be intentional in the sense that he was troubled and lashing out", de Blasio said of the incident.

Rojas, who lived with his mother in the Bronx, drove his vehicle Thursday from his home to Times Square, waited for traffic to start moving and then made a U-turn, authorities said.

One of the injured, Cheryl Howard, had blood dripping down her right arm and a bruise above her left eye.

"There was a maroon auto just careening at high speed".

"I'm so freaked out!"

"He was aiming for people", Howard said.

Six months ago the city completed a $55 million, almost six-year renovation of Times Square that turned roadways into pedestrian zones. Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized American and Taliban-trained militant, later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment. It aimed to improve congestion and safety, but not all sidewalks were fitted with safety bollards.
