Ransomware WannaCry: Uttar Pradesh police lists 5 steps to save your computer

Microsoft release Wannacrypt patch for unsupported Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003

A day after alerts regarding a global cyber attack were sounded across the country, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) police Tuesday issued a set of measures that organisations need to immediately put in place to build resilience to the ransomware attack.

Terming such cyber-attacks as a shared responsibility between tech companies and customers, the tech giant said, so many computers remained vulnerable even two months after the release of a patch.

In the wake of the recent WannaCry Ransomware cyber attacks, the Noida cyber cell issued an advisory warning the users to take necessary instructions to prevent such attacks by the malware. According to Wikipedia, once installed, wannacry uses the EternalBlue exploit and DoublePulsar backdoor developed by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) to spread through local networks and remote hosts, which have not been updated with the most recent security updates yet, to directly infect any exposed systems.

Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT's) in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Turkey have so far reported minimal damage from the Wannacry ransomware.

Still, since the attack has making headlines, the Internet is full of organizations and people providing guidance about safe use of technology.

There was no evidence on Monday of a second wave of attacks like the one that hit Friday, the BBC reports. Researchers have already found variants of the attack, so there is more than just one way it works. This ransomware attack, which demands users shell out $300 to $600 worth of Bitcoins to regain access to their systems, spread across Asia after rocking Europe this weekend. Congressman Ted Lieu, a rare legislator with any background in computer science, sees WannaCry as an opportunity to overhaul the VEP in favor of more disclosure: "Currently the Vulnerabilities Equities Process is not transparent and few people understand how the government makes these critical decisions", the California Democrat wrote in a statement as WannaCry raged around the world. Count on multi-level security, software update management, email monitoring and more.

Prevention is the best way to avoid becoming a ransomware victim.

In 2014, Microsoft ended support for the highly popular Windows XP, released in 2001 and engineered beginning in the late 1990s, arguing that the software was out of date and wasn't built with modern security safeguards.

Computers and networks that hadn't recently updated their systems are still at risk because the ransomware is lurking.

You should make multiple backups - to cloud services and using physical disk drives, at regular and frequent intervals.

The patch protected newer Windows systems and computers that had enabled Windows Update to apply it, but not older versions for which it no longer provides support.

CMIT Solutions delivers this kind of protection to many of our clients. There are nearly 150 million computers running Windows XP operation system globally.
