Ricciardo's lonely podium in Spain after Verstappen crashes out

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his car during the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix at the Barcelona Catalunya racetrack in Montmelo Spain Sunday

Hamilton would not be denied for long, however, and he got close enough to use a DRS boost and surge past Vettel with 22 laps to go.

But the 31-year-old was able to put those concerns behind him, recording his fastest lap on the penultimate lap, and extending his lead as the race entered its final stages. "The auto was quick enough but the way the race happened, it wasn't meant to be. Once again fighting, hanging in there, not much missing at the end".

On an afternoon that saw the two multiple world champions in a battle of their own with the rest so far behind they might as well have been in another race, Australian Ricciardo was the only other driver not lapped as his Red Bull auto finished 75.8 seconds behind the victor.

Equally as important, Ferrari showed that the upgrades brought by both title contenders to Spain canceled one another out.

That cut Hamilton's deficit from 7.3 seconds to less than five, but Vettel limited the damage with a stunning passing move on Bottas into Turn One.

Indeed, Red Bull's podium only occurred because Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes and Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari failed to finish.

The 32-year-old Mercedes AMG Petronas driver from Hertfordshire took his 55th career F1 victory today, his second at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and second of the 2017 season. The German emerged from the pits after his final slot alongside Hamilton, the pair almost clashing at Turn One before Vettel pulled ahead.

Hamilton, with 98 points, has now closed the gap on Vettel (104 points) to just six points in the Drivers' Championship, with Valtteri Bottas (63 points) a further 35 points back in P3.

Lewis Hamilton has hinted for the first time that his friendly relationship with Sebastian Vettel could be under threat after their wheel-to-wheel duel at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Said Hamilton: "To stay on Seb was a killer".

LEWIS HAMILTON lost four and a half pounds in weight in winning Sunday's Spanish GP.

The duo went wheel-to-wheel after Vettel came out alongside his title rival following a second pit stop.

"He came out of the pits and I was a bit surprised that it was so close", Vettel added. Hamilton made it past, took the lead and never looked back.

"It was an unfortunate start to the race which ultimately finished it also", he said.

"It was just the rawest fight that I can remember having for some real time", Hamilton said.

"I think I got the maximum out of the auto today and moving on to Monaco we will have a few more updates, which will hopefully give us another step, and at that track it's fair to say anything can happen". "He did a better job as a driver so there is nothing we can do about it now".

Vettel's and Hamilton's teammates both abandoned the race.

Bottas retired from the race on lap 39 due to a powertrain failure.

A drive-through penalty for first-lap contact ended Briton Rob Huff's victory chances in the second FIA World Touring Car Championship race at the Hungaroring.

"To have a close battle like that with a four-time champion is awesome".
