Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has directed the Secretary of Disaster Management Department, Amit Negi, to monitor the situation.

Over 1,800 travellers including pilgrims have been stranded after landslides hit a highway in northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, officials said Saturday. Rawat said in a series of tweets. Information of landslides was shared with various towns along the route which helped avoid people being stranded on the roads, he added.

Around 15,000 tourists were stranded after a landslide near Vishnuprayag on Badrinath route on Friday, said reports.

It is pertinent to mention that the mountainside at Hathi Parvat is stated to have been unstable since it was hit by landslide following rains during 2015. Following this, the highway has been closed near Vishnuprayag, one of the five confluences of Alaknanda river that is situated between Joshimath and Badrinath which is the famous pilgrim spot. Joshi had told reporters that the authorities were making every effort possible to provide all the facilities to the stranded pilgrims at Joshimath, Karnaprayag, Pipalkoti, Govindghat and Badrinath. The pilgrims have been asked to stay at these places till the way is cleared.

A major boulder has damaged about 65 meters of the road and the number of vehicles struck is said to be around 500.
