Roger Ailes, media guru and political strategist, dies at 77

Former Fox News chief Roger Ailes dead at 77

Roger Ailes, the bombastic and controversial founder and CEO of Fox News ousted previous year in a sexual harassment scandal, has died.

A statement from his wife Elizabeth said she was "profoundly sad and heartbroken", calling him a "patriot".

Mr Ailes, she said, was "the most wonderful loving husband (to me) and father to our son Zachary. He was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise-and to give back", Drudge Report quoted Elizabeth as saying in a statement.

Ailes, who reshaped television news over five decades in the TV and entertainment industry, was 77.

Even in death, it looks like Ailes has left one last patch of scorched earth.

But Ailes, whose perch at the top of Fox News ended suddenly last summer following sexual harassment allegations, also leaves behind several pending lawsuits alleging harassment or race or gender discrimination involving two dozen current or former employees. Ailes denied the allegations, saying the reason her contract was not renewed was due to "disappointingly low ratings".

Ailes was a prominent figure in American media as well as a powerful force in conservative politics, and many expressed their condolences.

Bill O'Reilly is warmly remembering former Fox News Channel founder Roger Ailes, who died after a fall at his home on May 10.

Ailes was sacked from Fox News previous year after he was accused of sexual harassment by more than 25 women.

"Today, America lost one of its great patriotic warriors", Hannity said on Twitter. Carlson said she was sacked for refusing Ailes' sexual advancements, and Tantaros alleged Fox News was "steeped in intimidation, indecency and misogyny".

Long before Fox News, Ailes was a Republican operative who saw long before most what television could do for the party. "Roger Ailes experienced that hatred and it killed him". He abruptly resigned last July.

By the time he stood down, Ailes had become a central figure in the U.S. political landscape - both revered by fellow conservatives, and vilified by the left.

Twenty-First Century Fox had no immediate statement. He joined Fox in 1996 and helped build it into a massively influential and profitable section of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox.

He played a role in Mr Nixon's successful campaign, as well as for other Republican presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush Snr. He was also reported to have advised President Donald Trump in the campaign a year ago.

Ailes leaves behind his wife, along with their son, Zachary Ailes.
