Russian foreign minister mocks media over Trump disclosures

Donald Trump

"So if you are talking about that, I see no secret here", Lavrov told reporters in Nicosia during a joint news conference with Cypriot foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

Lavrov arrived in Nicosia on Thursday to attend a foreign ministers' meeting of the Council of Europe at the end of Cyprus's presidency this month.

"A former US intelligence official has told CBS News that "inappropriate" information" was discussed by Mr. Trump during that Oval Office meeting with Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak last week.

"There used to be a joke in the Soviet Union that there was no news in the newspaper Pravda and no truth in the newspaper Izvestia", Lavrov said through a translator. "It's true, I get the impression, that many USA media are working in this vein".

The reports came several days after the White House faced criticism for a possible security breach after it allowed a Russian news service photographer into the Oval Office to snap photos of Mr. Trump with Lavrov and Kislyak last week. They are also the names of two long-running newspapers in Russian Federation.

"It seems to me that any contact with the president of such a country as the United States is important and valuable, but we do not ever comment on the substance of talks", Ushakov said when asked how important for Moscow information voiced by Trump during talks with Lavrov was.

"As far as I can recall, maybe one month or two months before the Trump administration had an official ban on laptops on airlines from seven middle Eastern counties and it was connected directly with the terrorist threat", Lavrov added.

Even before Trump's meeting with the Russians, Washington's intelligence partners overseas have noted a barrage of reports around Trump, the Russians and spies.

The Washington Post is reporting that Trump revealed highly classified information about Islamic State militants to Russian officials during a meeting at the White House last week.

"We had a very, very successful meeting with the foreign minister of Russia", Trump said in response to questions at a White House event with President Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey. As such, he said, there was nothing about the story for the Kremlin to confirm or deny.

Brownlee said a resolution to the situation in Syria requires a concerted effort from the USA and Russian Federation, and he hoped the meeting between Mr. Trump and Lavrov would prove "a step towards that".
