Ryan has full confidence in Trump

House Speaker Paul Ryan

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Moscow could provide a recording of a controversial exchange between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US President Donald Trump that has plunged the White House into turmoil.

"We're going to walk and chew gum at the same time", he said.

Although the meeting was held in a secure room in the Capitol Visitors Center where classified information can be discussed, nothing Mr Rosenstein shared with the senators was "remotely classified", according to one senator who asked for anonymity to speak frankly about the meeting.

The letter came after the Intelligence Committee made a similar request for Comey's memos.

Before speaking with reporters, Ryan told rank-and-file Republicans in a closed-door meeting that he supported the ongoing House and Senate Intelligence panels' investigations into Russian Federation hacking, as well as a third being carried out by the FBI.

"The appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller is an overdue but constructive first step in ensuring a proper investigation of Trump Administration ties to Russia and Russian interests occurs within the Department of Justice". "I also got a very, very strong recommendation, as you know, from the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein".

The May 10 conversation happened the day after Comey's dismissal and bolsters the idea that the bureau's investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian agents was the primary motive. He called the suggestion he had done anything potentially worthy of criminal charges "totally ridiculous".

Citing unnamed sources, the Washington Post reported that Trump had shared intelligence with Lavrov regarding an Islamic State group terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on airplanes. The President's anger contrasted with a more measured written statement released by the White House on Wednesday evening, when Mr Trump declared that a thorough investigation would find "no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity". "The investigation would have always continued, and obviously, the termination of Comey would not have ended it". We need to be focused on what our role is.

"This was a necessary and long-overdue step by the Department of Justice that moves us closer to getting to the truth". "That is what Congress does in conducting oversight of the executive branch".
