Sen. John Cornyn removes self from consideration for FBI director role

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas speaks on Capitol Hill in Washington. Conservative senators are pushing to diminish insurance coverage requirements imposed by President Barack Obama’s health care law

Brandon Rottinghaus, professor of political science at the University of Houston says Cornyn does have the kind of background the Trump administration might want in an Federal Bureau of Investigation director. Cornyn said "I have the distinct privilege of serving 28 million Texans in the United States Senate, and that is where my focus remains".

But Cornyn's response to the firing of Director James Comey was to accuse the Democrats of hypocrisy because they had been critical of Comey during the FBI's investigation of Hillary Clinton. Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC declined Monday, leaving former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers as the only name still under official consideration with partisan political experience.

Cornyn met with Attorney General Jeff Sessions over the weekend, further fueling speculation that he could lead the agency tasked with investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election. Trump cited Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails as the reason for his dismissal, but others are anxious that the firing may have had something to do with the agency's investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign, during the election. Cornyn is one of 11 people under consideration by Trump to replace Comey.

Cornyn is the No. 2 Republican in the Senate behind Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said Tuesday that he'd recommended that Trump nominate Garland for the post.

Senators return to work Monday afternoon and will consider nominations throughout the week to fill out several senior positions in the Trump administration, including Rachel Brand to be associate attorney general, the third-ranking position at the Justice Department.

The meetings come a day after news broke that Trump allegedly asked Comey in February to drop the FBI's investigation into his former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Senate Democrats likely will stall on whomever Trump nominates while Republican senators such as Susan Collins of ME and Lindsey Graham of SC have voiced concerns over nominating someone to the position who works in a partisan environment. But Trump has remained leery of Ayotte, who publicly broke with him during his presidential campaign and criticized him, according to people close to the White House.

Cornyn has served as Texas' Attorney General, a Texas Supreme Court justice and a local judge.

"I think the process is going to go quickly".
