Shadow Brokers Promises Exploit of the Month Club

While some of the exploits in the possession of the Shadow Brokers have already been patched, the rapid spread of WannaCry underscores how many individuals and institutions are still running laughably outdated software.

Apparently, Shadow Brokers have already tried to sell information to several multinational companies, countries, and global organizations, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the UN, Microsoft, Apple, and Google, but none of them was interested in that kind of purchase.

"In June, TheShadowBrokers is announcing "TheShadowBrokers Data Dump of the Month" service", the group wrote in its open letter on the Steemit website Tuesday.

The Shadow Brokers said that members can expect to get compromised banking data from SWIFT, a global banking network, newer exploits for Windows 10, and compromised network data from "Russian, Chinese, Iranian or North Korean" nuclear and missile programs.

Shadow Brokers came to public attention last August when it mounted an unsuccessful attempt to auction off a set of older cyber-spying tools it said were stolen from the U.S. National Security Agency.

Russia-linked hacking group The Shadow Brokers has warned of a new release of exploits next month, in an update which will likely cause sweaty palms at the NSA.

The Shadow Brokers says it will offer the data as part of a monthly subscription service, which it will unveil next month.

The shadowy hacking group claimed that Microsoft released its vulnerability patch in March while also alleging that the Equation Group was paying USA tech companies not to patch vulnerabilities. The group alluded that because they posted a screenshot with the content of some of their hacking tools, the NSA realized what they lost and informed Microsoft of the zero-days.

In a blog post, the group said that the data would be available to anyone willing to pay a subscription fee.

In an irregular move, Microsoft skipped its scheduled monthly patch-release day in February before resuming on March 14, at which point the company quietly fixed many vulnerabilities that the Shadow Brokers then released one month later, in April.

Any U.S. government organizations are unlikely to negotiate with the hackers, Dillon says.

A version of the government's process, known as "vulnerabilities equities process", has been in place for some time, although its exact details are unclear. The possible targets include Microsoft's Windows 10, which was unaffected by the initial attack and is on at least 500m devices around the world.

On the other hand, instead of telling them to Microsoft to patch up those vulnerabilities, it could bring forth a tumultuous situation as far as online security is concerned.

The group goes on to skewer Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith, who on Sunday issued pointed criticism of the USA spy agencies for stockpiling vulnerabilities.
